Director of Facilities
Alex Smart was named Director of Facilities at Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University (KCAD) in February 2015. Smart currently also serves the college as a member of the Senior Leadership Team and Emergency Management Team.
Prior to joining KCAD, he served as the Manager of Design, Construction and Renovation for the Grand Rapids Public Schools district, and as project architect and project manager for a number nationally known architecture and design firms. His 28 years of architectural and construction experience also includes having owned his own architecture practice in the Grand Rapids area.
Smart has served on the Board of Directors of the American Institute of Architects at the local and State levels as past Manager of Sponsorship and Advertising, Associate Director, and Director of Public Relations. Smart has also served the West Michigan community as a past member of the City of Wyoming Cultural Commission, City of Wyoming Parks and Recreations Commission, City of Wyoming Form Base Code Committee, City of Grand Rapids Vital Streets Commission, and as a City of Grand Rapids Festival of the Arts Architectural Tour Guide. Currently Smart serves on the City of Wyoming Planning Commission and coaches the Grand Rapids Spartans Girls Volleyball Team.
Smart received his Bachelor of Architecture degree from Andrews University, and holds a license to practice architecture in the state of Michigan.
