Student Employment Opportunities

KCAD students are an important part of the university workforce. There are limited number of student employees on campus working in a number of diverse areas. Working while attending KCAD helps students earn income to assist them with their educational expenses. Open positions will be emailed to your Ferris email account. For fall semester, this usually happens during the month of August.

What Is a Work Study Position?

Please submit a cover letter and resumé via email to Lori DeForest ([email protected]) clearly indicating the position you are seeking.  Priority will be given to those students who have unmet financial need.  Also please include your student ID number.      

US students must be enrolled at least half-time. International students must be enrolled full-time during the fall and/or spring semesters. In the case of summer semester, students must either be enrolled half-time for summer or be registered as half-time or more for the fall semester. Students working during the break between Fall and Spring semesters must be enrolled at least half-time for Spring semester.

High school graduates are eligible to work during the summer after their high school graduation and prior to starting their freshman year (fall semester) provided they are registered for fall semester at least half-time and are enrolled in a degree granting curriculum.


KCAD Student Services Desk $10.10 per hour, Deadline: open until the job is filled

The Student Services Office has student employment openings available for working at the Student Services desk.  

Eligible candidates’ schedules must allow them to work daytime and/or early evening shifts – these will be customized to fit around your class schedule. The office is open Monday through Friday between 8:00am – 5:00pm, and for spring 2023 the office will be open until 7:00pm on Wednesdays and Thursdays. There are occasional opportunities to assist with weekend/evening special events.

Candidates must be self-motivated, professional, have great attention to detail, and be able to work with confidential information.

After settled into the role and shadowing many other tour guides, this position will have the opportunity to lead tours of KCAD to prospective students and guests, highlighting the facilities and programs, being an ambassador for the College. Tours will not be assigned until there have been plenty of shadowing opportunities and tour-specific training. Additionally, the student employee will:  

  • Provide friendly, supportive customer service to students, faculty, and staff; refer to appropriate personnel and resources.
  • Provide administrative/clerical support to all Student Services staff (Admissions, Student Engagement, Financial Aid, etc.) by greeting guests, answering phone calls, responding to emails, stocking office supplies and forms, etc. This will include desk coverage at both the Student Services office and occasionally at the Admissions Services office.
  • Issue bus passes to students
  • Distribute incoming USPS mail to faculty and staff
  • Assist in a variety of projects and events to support Student Success division which include events like New Student Orientation, Connect to KCAD, Weekly campus tours, Open House, etc.
  • Potentially be a student mentor to current KCAD students that includes one (1) hour a week that is dedicated to meeting with mentees.
  • Design promotional materials- graphic design for posters, social media, etc.
  • Customer service or office experience a plus
  • Attention to detail and ability to self-motivate is key
  • Support an environment that is welcoming and inclusive to all
  • *Graphic Design majors preferred, but others are encouraged to apply!
  • Adhere to all COVID-19 related protocols such as cleaning your area before and after your shift, periodically sanitizing the desk area. At this time, masks are optional.

FlexLab, $10.10 per hour, Deadline: open until the job is filled

The FlexLab executes the Dow Center’s mission of aiding students, staff, faculty and community in learning about and using digital fabrication technologies. 

The successful applicant will receive training to become familiar with 2D and 3D computer design and the use of the FlexLab’s specific input and output devices – including wide format inkjet printers, vinyl cutters, 3D scanners, 3D printers and laser cutters/engravers. 

FlexLab student employees work directly with the Dow Center FlexLab Coordinator. Students will learn new skills and technologies on the job to facilitate the successful output of digital fabrication/design projects with the KCAD/FSU community. Weekly schedule will be decided based on the student's availability, the FlexLab's staffing needs, and open lab hours. Hours are somewhat flexible and work around the student's course schedule as it changes from semester to semester.

A willingness to learn on the job and adaptability throughout the workday is vital.This is a part-time position on campus at Kendall College 17 Fountain building. 

Experience

  • Retail or service industry experience.
  • Experience and working knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud.
  • A willingness to learn on the job Rhino and other software as needed.
  • Experience with or interest to learn the use of 2D and 3D input and output devices – such as wide format printers, vinyl cutters, 3D scanners, 3D printers and laser cutters/engravers.

Duties

  • Communicate effectively with the Coordinator and the KCAD/FSU Campus at large.
  • Track material and technology usage and supply prompt reporting.
  • Learn and teach FlexLab processes to FlexLab users
  • Operate equipment including wide format inkjet printers, 3D scanners, 3D printers, vinyl cutters, and LASER cutters/engravers
  • Learn and understand the pros and cons of each process.
  • Accurately record and calculate billing and usage data.
  • Projects as assigned by Coordinator.
