How to Apply - Graduate

Graduate applicants for 
Spring 2020 and Summer 2020

Continue your education with our graduate and certificate programs. KCAD offers 8 unique graduate programs and 2 certificate programs. Select the program you wish to apply to below for program-specific admissions requirements.

Priority Deadlines

In order to receive priority consideration for graduate fellowships, graduate assistantships, or scholarships, applicants to MAE, MArch and MFA programs must apply and submit all required application materials by the following priority application deadlines:

  • Spring 2020 semester -- October 15, 2019

KCAD encourages outstanding candidates to apply at all times. KCAD will accept and consider applications after the priority deadlines; however, applicants may not receive consideration for graduate fellowships, graduate assistantships, or scholarships after priority deadline dates.

Master of Architecture

The KCAD MArch accepts students each year for the fall semester only. Please review the admissions requirements for Fall 2020 and beyond here.

Master of Art Education

For admissions consideration to the MAE program, applicants should complete the following:

  • Click here to apply online
  • Official transcripts from all institutions of higher education.
  • Letter of intent outlining proposed artistic goals.
  • Curriculum vitae.
  • Portfolio of your work in chosen area of emphasis as well as your student’s work (labeled with title, size and media). Portfolio may be submitted as a CD of digital images (JPEG format). Please include 10 images of your own work and 10 of your student’s work.
  • Three letters of recommendation from professionals in your field (sent directly to Kendall).
  • Please also note, an application fee is only applicable to International Student applicants.

Master of Arts in Design

The successful candidate will have established themselves professionally prior to entering the Master of Arts in Design program. Professional experience may include professional internships; work, military or non-profit experience; community service; or other career-related activities.

An applicant must:

  • Click here to apply online
  • Provide official transcripts showing the completion of an undergraduate degree in design from a regionally-accredited institution of higher education, with a minimum GPA of 3.0.
  • Submit a curriculum vitae showing successful professional experience.
  • Submit a 1,000 – 1,200 word writing sample to demonstrate effective idea development and communication in written form.
  • Submit three letters of recommendation.
  • A faculty committee convened from the faculty teaching graduate courses acts upon applications for admission.

Master of Arts or Certificate in Visual and Critical Studies

For admissions consideration to the MA in Visual and Critical Studies program, applicants should complete the following:

  • Three letters of recommendation (if applying to either the MFA or MArch and the MA program concurrently, the same letters may be utilized for both folders)
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Transcripts
  • Minimum degree requirements: BA/BS/BFA
  • Letter of intent: 200-350 word count letter describing what you hope to bring to the program. What are your goals and how do you believe this program will contribute towards those goals?
  • Writing sample: applicants must submit a 1000-1200 word count writing sample. Appropriate formats include essay, research paper, or criticism.

Master of Fine Arts

For admissions consideration to the MFA program, applicants should complete the following:

  • Click here to apply online
  • Official transcripts from all institutions of higher education.
  • Letter of intent outlining proposed artistic goals.
  • Concise artist statement that addresses the philosophical foundation of your work.
  • Curriculum vitae.
  • Portfolio of work: 20 images in chosen area of emphasis. Images must be submitted digitally via CD or Flash Drive (JPEG format), and should not exceed a resolution of 640 x 480. Each image must be labeled with title, size, medium and year.
  • Three letters of recommendation from professionals in your field (sent directly to Kendall).
  • Please also note, an application fee is only applicable to International Student applicants.

Certificate in Design and Innovation Management

The Certificate in Design and Innovation Management is a 12-credit certificate that can stand alone or be applied towards a Master of Business Administration (MBA) through Ferris State University.
