Contemporaries: Then and Now

The Gordon Collection and West Michigan Painters

June 19, 2013 12:00 pm –July 12, 2013 5:00 pm

The Kendall Galleries are proud to present “Contemporaries: Then and Now | The Gordon Collection and West Michigan Painters,” an exhibition showcasing West Michigan painters going back to the beginnings of the field of painting as it emerged in Grand Rapids and its environs.

Highlighted is a collection, generously given by George and Barbara Gordon, which includes work by such notable artists as Mathias Alten and ranges from the mid-1800s to 1986. In addition to the more well-known artists, there are some surprises, such as a painting by David Wolcott Kendall, much more recognized in our community as a furniture designer.

Most of the contemporary artists in this exhibition are alumni of Kendall and are familiar faces from the region. Continuing and building on the rich local tradition of landscape painting, their work serves to show the breadth and depth of talent amongst West Michigan’s painting community.

Exhibitors include: Margo Burian, Ivan Fortushniak, James Johnson, James Karsina, Megan Klco, Connie Kuhnle, Barbara Schilling, Carla Sutton, Reynold Weidenaar, Mathias Alten, Robert W. Godfrey, William Samuel Horton, Edwin A. (Edward) Turner, Foster Jewell, Lawrence Charmichael Earle, Marinus Harting, Robert Rouse, Frederic K. Wykes, Armand Merizon, Blanche McMullen, Frederick Stuart Church, Norman Stiles Chamberlain, Gerrit Albertus Beneker, Kreigh L. Collins, Will Howe Foote, and Edward Gregory Smith.

This exhibition is on display in the Kendall Galleries in the Woodbridge N Ferris Building, 17 Pearl St NW
