Kendall is proud to partner with the Grand Rapids Art Museum to present Graphic Design: Now in production, a traveling exhibition co-organized by the Smithsonian Institution’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, New York, and the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis. Co-curated by Andrew Blauvelt, Curator of Architecture and Design, Walker Art Center and Ellen Lupton, Senior Curator of Contemporary Design, the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum.

Graphic design gives shape to thousands of artifacts we encounter each day – from posters, magazines, and books to film titles, websites, and digital interfaces. Graphic designers employ words, images, and a vast array of materials and processes to produce the visual messages that surround us.

Graphic Design: Now in Production focuses on recent innovations in the ways designers work. Over the past fifteen years, graphic design has expanded from a specialized profession to a broadly understood practice and a widely deployed tool. Embracing this shift, many designers have become producers, utilizing their skills as authors, publishers, instigators, and entrepreneurs.

The term “production” refers to how things are made. In the graphic arts, production once encompassed such specialized trades as typesetting and photo retouching. In the early 1990s, these trades converged into a continuous process that flowed directly from desktop computers to printing presses. While desktop publishing altered the journey from initial concept to printed page, today’s technologies are changing the means of manufacture and circulation. Print-on-demand services, low-cost digital printing equipment, and online distribution systems have generated new opportunities for designers, writers, artists, and others to become visual producers.
