Operation Paydirt: KCAD ArtPrize artist Mel Chin
ArtPrize 2014: Money Matters Exhibition Project
Invest in a solution to childhood lead poisoning…one Fundred at a time!
Operation Paydirt was initiated by artist Mel Chin in 2006 to engage everyone across the nation as artistic collaborators to envision and actualize a future free of childhood lead poisoning. Central to Operation Paydirt is the Fundred Dollar Bill Project, a creative campaign advancing education and engagement around lead through the creation and collection of a special hand-drawn currency - Fundreds. Individually, the Fundreds represent the value of imagination and hope; collectively they represent an informed public voice speaking to those with the capacity to end this national problem.
Although 100% preventable, lead poisoning continues to put millions of children at risk for lifelong brain damage, and compromises the health and well being of communities throughout the country. Lead poisoning has been linked to reduced IQ, poorer performance in school, juvenile delinquency, and even adult incarceration. In Michigan, 90% of children poisoned by lead are only 1-2 years of age.
During ArtPrize, Operation Paydirt invites the Grand Rapids community to create and donate Fundreds of their own, and join the 450,000 who have participated the in project thus far. By creating, and donating Fundreds your voice can make an impact locally, and nationally. Once millions of Fundred Dollar Bills are joined together they will be brought to Washington D.C. for a delivery event. The goal is to exchange the special currency for real resources to deliver all of us from the invisible threat of lead.
