Woman in a classroom having a positive interaction with a student

TRICIA ERICKSON Fine Arts Educator and Designer Northview Public Schools Grand Rapids, MI (’10, Master of Art Education)

“KCAD offered me exactly what I was looking for: a program that treated me like an artist, but also understood that I’m a teacher who needs to be able to apply what I do to my classroom. I felt valued as an artist and empowered to make a difference in the lives of my students. I learned how to teach based on brain-based research and an exploration of different learning styles, and that heavily influences how I teach today. The hands-on studio as classes allowed me to make time for myself as an artist as well, so that I could continue to develop my own work.

I also made lifelong friendships with other passionate art educators and classmates. Now, my network helps me stay current so I can provide relevant content to my students. I’m a people person who really enjoys making art with others, so being an art teacher is as good as it gets. I enjoy the challenge of inspiring students to see the potential of what art can be and helping ‘non-artists’ realize they can be creative too.”
