The American Society of Furniture Designers (ASFD) has awarded its 2017 Touching Lives By Design Scholarship to Annina Fremgen, a student in the Furniture Design program at Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University (KCAD).

Created in 2014, the scholarship honors a college sophomore or junior studying furniture design who exhibits exceptional performance in the classroom and a heightened understanding of the discipline’s human-centered nature. In addition to transcripts and letters of reference, applicants must also submit an essay detailing their reasons behind choosing furniture design as a career path.

Fremgen was born in China and raised in Belgium before moving to the United States in 2014. Upon graduating from KCAD, she hopes to join a contemporary design team that is intentional about its ecological footprint.

In her scholarship essay, Fremgen wrote, “Distress for the environment is not as present as it should be. I believe designers need to hold empathy for the user, but also the user’s environment. I hope to bring to the industry an interest in the materials we use and attention to the life cycle of furniture.”

This summer, Fremgen deepened her understanding of the furniture design industry through an 8-week internship with Belwith Products, a major designer and manufacturer of decorative and functional hardware products based in West Michigan.
