Graduate Student Huaming Wang Wins Independent Award in ArtPrize 10 In ArtPrize 10, MFA/Master of Architecture student Huaming Wang won the Asian Artist Award for his piece "Pure Michigan.”

Fashion Studies Students Makes Waves with Costume Designs for Elton John

While audience members and critics were raving about Elton John's recent farewell performance in Grand Rapids last night, the Rocket Man took to Instagram to applaud the work of KCAD Fashion Studies students, who envisioned original garment designs inspired by John's unique brand of music and fashion through a competition organized in collaboration with Van Andel Arena. Student Danielle Cavinder's Wizard of Oz-inspired design was chosen as the winner in a public vote on Facebook, earning her a $1,000 scholarship.

Multiple Furniture Design Alumni Land in Winners Circle of 2018 ISFD Pinnacle Awards The following alumni from the Furniture Design program were recognized with 2018 Pinnacle Awards from the International Society of Furniture Designers (ISFD).

  • Shannon Lookabill ('95, BFA), Andrea Otto ('10, BFA) and Mike Warren ('82, BFA) won top honors in the Youth Furniture category
  • Liz Moore ('13, BFA) and Laura Niece ('03) were part of a team from Otto & Moore Design that won top honors in the Major Collections category
  • Christopher Sandomenico ('01, BFA) won top honors in the Upholstery category
  • Thor Taber ('08, BFA) won top honors in the Formal Dining category

Master of Arts in Design Alumnus Ryan Kilpatrick Named to Grand Rapids Business Journal's "40 Under 40" List for 2018 Ryan Kilpatrick ('13, Master of Arts in Design) was named to the Grand Rapids Business Journal's "40 Under 40 Business Leaders" list for 2018. As the Executive Director of Housing Next, Kilpatrick helps power a cross-sector collaborative initiative that unites nonprofit, government, and business partners to address the need for affordable housing in the region.

Collaborative Design Alumnus Matt VanSweden Honored by Regional Sustainable Business Organization Matt VanSweden (’17, BFA Collaborative Design) was honored with the Future Hall of Fame Award by the West Michigan Sustainable Business Forum.

Board Game Created by Digital Art and Design Students Wins Award at 2018 Meaningful Play Conference Miner Madness, an educational board game created by students in the Digital Art and Design program aimed at introducing young learners to the basics of code theory, won the Most Meaningful Student Game Award at the 2018 Meaningful Play conference. Students created the game in collaboration with local IT company OST through the program's EPIC project under the direction of Assistant Professor Susan Bonner.

Printmaking Alumna Madison Nicole May's Transformative Creative Education Profiled by GR Magazine Madison Nicole May ('16, BFA Printmaking) was profiled by Grand Rapids Magazine in a piece exploring how her time at KCAD helped her grow as both an artist and a person.

Fashion Studies Alumnus Colby Roanhorse Blends Culture, Community for ArtPrize 10 Mural Colby Roanhorse (’17, BFA Fashion Studies) was featured in an article by Grand Rapids Magazine that explored the public mural he created for ArtPrize 10 as part of the UICA:Outside exhibition. The mural draws from Roanhorse's Navajo heritage as well as contemporary movements toward sustainable and equitable development.

Drawing Alumna Katie Rellinger Showcases Daily Practice in ArtPrize 10 Katie Rellinger (’17, BFA Drawing) was profiled in an article by The Grand Rapids Community College Collegiate that explored her ArtPrize 10 entry, “365 Days of Katie.” The entry consisted of a series of artwork drawn daily on Post-It© notes that spans 12 months of Rellinger’s life post-graduation.

MFA Alumnus Tatsuki Hakoyama Holds Solo Exhibition at Ferris State University Tatsuki Hakoyama ('14, MFA), who currently teaches at KCAD as an adjunct instructor, held a solo exhibition, The Space Between, at the Ferris State University Fine Art Gallery. Hakoyama also gave an artist talk in conjunction with the exhibition.
