KCAD Students, Alumni Let Their Creativity Run Wild in the 2016 West Michigan ADDY Awards
In spite of the primal theme of this year’s American Advertising Federation (AAF) West Michigan ADDY Awards – “Unleash Your Creative Beast” – the Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University (KCAD) community took center stage with some highly refined work.
KCAD Graphic Design students dominated the student categories, winning 37 out of the 40 awards that were given out. A total of 20 students took home awards, as did a number of KCAD alumni.
“KCAD students and alumni have cultivated a strong tradition of success at both the regional and national levels of the ADDY Awards, and I’m proud to see that continue in this year’s competition,” said Graphic Design Professor and Interim Dean of the College Ron Riksen.
Alumnus Rob Jackson (’89, Illustration) stole the show as the latest recipient of AAF West Michigan’s prestigious Silver Medal Award, given annually to an individual who demonstrates success and original thinking in their field, works to raise standards in the world of advertising, and participates in civic activities that contribute to human or social welfare. Jackson is the Principal and Creative Director of local advertising firm Extra Credit Projects, which took home a total of 12 awards, the most of any firm.

Senior Zac Sturgeon (professor: Angela Dow) was the evening’s biggest student winner, taking home the prestigious Best of Show award for his “Happy Tacos” interactive mobile app. “Happy Tacos” also earned Sturgeon a Gold ADDY in the Interactive App category and a Bronze ADDY in the Logo Design category.

“From the app to the ID system, the entire project was extremely well thought out and crafted. This student went above and beyond by developing a well-designed app, where every detail was considered in an effort to get to the simplest, smartest solution,” said judge Jason Sperling, Executive Creative Director at California-based advertising agency RPA. “The language and graphic language helped give Happy Tacos a smart and ownable brand personality. This was student work at its best.”
KCAD students also won both student Judges’ Choice awards. Senior Nicole Fuller (professors: Angela Dow, Suzanne Jonkman) won the Judges’ Choice award for Collateral Material and a Gold ADDY with her magazine design “Our Way: An Insider on the Amputee Lifestyle.”

“Grace, restraint, beauty, and unvarnished eloquent truth as only a first-hand account can accomplish. Humbling,” said judge Bill Oakley, Executive Director of the University of Utah AdCenter.
Senior Josephine Uhila (professor: Joan Sechrist) won the Judges’ Choice award for Magazine Advertising Campaign and a Gold ADDY with her campaign for Bull and Stash notebooks.

“In student work you'll typically see a lot of gags and shock tactics, which makes this work a rare show of emotional depth. These journals were elevated from mere products to a purpose-driven brand, and the art direction demonstrated really good taste and attention to craft,” said judge John Carstens, a Chicago-based freelance creative director and writer.

All of the student and professional entries that won Gold ADDY awards will now move on to the district level of the competition.
