News Bites: Art History Professor to Lead Panel at 50th International Congress on Medieval Studies

Art History professor Dr. Laura Whatley will preside over a panel entitled “Rethinking Medieval Maps” at the 50th International Congress on Medieval Studies, an annual event that stands as the largest gathering of medieval scholars in the world.

The panel, which Whatley co-organized with fellow medieval scholar Chet Van Duzer, will explore the need to fundamentally shift the way scholars from all disciplines research, look at, and understand medieval maps. Proposals were invited for papers exploring what Whatley calls the “less privileged aspects” of medieval maps, including the mapping of the unknown, negative space, and counterfactual cartography. She and Van Duzer then culled the best submissions to determine the panel’s makeup.

“I think of organizing a discussion panel as similar to curating an art show,” said Whatley. “Chet and I both work on medieval cartography and wanted to organize an interdisciplinary session that would inspire new research in the field.”

The 50th International Congress on Medieval Studies will be held on the campus of Western Michigan University from May 14-17, 2015. For more information, visit wmich.edu/medieval/congress.
