Since 1998, the GRGA has been an impetus for connection and collaboration among Grand Rapids’ robust community of art galleries, art retailers, and art-focused nonprofit organizations. Each year, the GRGA releases a comprehensive guidebook that profiles area art institutions, both large and small, and spotlights upcoming public events to help visitors to Grand Rapids engage with art. Throughout the year, the organization stimulates cross-promotional efforts among its members.

Joseph first became involved with the GRGA in 2001 and has served as an officer since 2002, previously as president and treasurer. The GRGA holds elections on a yearly basis, with each member organization designating a representative to vote.

“I think it’s important for us as art institutions to communicate and collaborate. We are a network of people who can share ideas, collaborate on projects, and pool information on how to maximize our spaces and our resources,” she said. “We all come together and collaborate even though we may have differentto goals and missions. In a lot of other cities art institutions might be more competitive; I like the spirit of cooperation and mutual investment that exists here.”
