Camling, a professional children’s book illustrator based in Des Moines, IA, has a selection of her work on display in the museum through the end of the month.
Since graduating from KCAD as both the Illustration program’s Excellence Award winner and the Valedictorian of her graduating class, Camling has illustrated four children’s books while also working as a freelance illustrator for clients such as American Greetings and ESPN Magazine.

“Children's books were a natural fit for my work. I love bright colors, drawing children and animals and the way that words and pictures collaborate into a very magical creation,” says Camling. “I started by building my portfolio with the goal of being a children’s book illustrator in mind, as children's literacy is important to me and the field is a really exciting one to work in.”

Camling’s fifth children’s book, a historical non-fiction picture book about the North Carolina Gold Rush titled “North Carolina: The First Golden State,” is scheduled to be released in mid-2017.
“I’m painting the illustrations with watercolor and gouache. It's much different than the other books I've done, but the historical aspect has been more interesting and rewarding than I anticipated,” says Camling.
This is Camling’s second solo exhibition at The Sanford Museum. In addition to showing her work in a number of exhibitions throughout Iowa and Michigan, she has also been published in the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators Bulletin.
