Integrating for Impact, the design thinking workshop organized by Kendall College of Art and Design’s (KCAD) Continuing Studies department, is well positioned to take the next step in its evolution thanks to significant funding from the Steelcase Foundation.

The funding was formally awarded to Grand Valley State University’s Johnson Center for Philanthropy, which has been working with KCAD to refine Integrating for Impact since its launch in February of 2015. Steelcase Foundation trustees approved the grant in an effort to increase the region’s ability to train non-profit organizations in human-centered design methods and the innovation process.

KCAD and the Johnson Center will work together to infuse the Integrating for Impact curriculum, developed in partnership with Christine Albertini of Partners Worldwide and Georgia Everse of Bravo Echo, with tools and strategies that are specifically geared toward non-profit organizations. Other objectives of the collaboration are to increase the capacity of both KCAD and the Johnson Center to offer ongoing assistance and support to non-profit organizations using human-centered design, conduct a series of demonstration initiatives with select non-profit organizations to test new strategies and ideas, and to evaluate and publish the findings.

“The Johnson Center for Philanthropy has been one of our key collaborators since sending several of its employees to the pilot run of Integrating for Impact earlier this year. Now, with the generous support of the Steelcase Foundation, we look forward to continuing our collaborative efforts to expand both the effectiveness of the workshop and its engagement with the non-profit sector,” said Brenda Sipe, director of Continuing Studies at KCAD. “Our goal is to build this workshop into a game-changing asset for the region.”
