News Bites: Interior Design Student Helps Power Top Team in 2016 IIDA Student Charrette at NeoCon
Kelsey Ballast, a student in the Interior Design program at Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University, was part of a team that recently took 1st place in the 2016 International Interior Design Association (IIDA) Student Charrette, held at NeoCon in Chicago.

Over the course of the six-and-a-half-hour competition, ten teams of five students were challenged to design an 8,500 square-foot space in Chicago’s Merchandise Mart building for the Chicago Office of Tourism. Designs had to accommodate office, retail, and event spaces in a mixed-use layout that encouraged co-working environments and dissolved the boundaries between personal and commercial space.
Teams were asked to develop a board illustrating their design concept using only hand-drawn renderings and found photographs before presenting their concept to a panel of judges.

Ballast’s success in the IIDA Student Charrette comes on the heels of her 1st place finish in the IIDA Booth Design Competition, which challenged entrants to design the IIDA’s booth for the upcoming 2016 Orgatec Trade Fair.
