News Bites: KCAD Alumni Win Telly Award for Will Rogers Motion Picture Association Campaign

Extra Credit Projects, the Grand Rapids-based advertising firm led by Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University (KCAD) alumnus Rob Jackson (’89, BFA Illustration), was recently awarded a Silver Telly Award for a three-part video campaign produced for the Will Rogers Motion Picture Association (WRMPA).

Founded in 1979, the Telly Awards recognize excellence in commercial film and video production throughout the world. The competition receives an average of 13,000 entries each year.

Jackson and his team at Extra Credit Projects created the video campaign as part of a complete brand overhaul for the WRMPA, which provides support and services to veterans of the motion picture and theatre industries. Rogers, the famed American cowboy, actor, performer, and humorist, served as the primary inspiration for the project. Each of the three award-winning videos highlighted the WRMPA’s mission and services using an antique western aesthetic and real archived footage of Rogers.

“As part of an overall integrated campaign which included a new identity, print, website, digital ads, convention materials and more, these videos took on the color, tone, and copy of the campaign,” says Jackson. “We did our research with multiple trips to Los Angeles and even had the Will Rogers team to Grand Rapids during the process. This has grown out of some of our West Coast work with the major studios and has been fulfilling to help preserve the lasting legacy of Will Rogers and all the good his foundation is still doing.”

Extra Credit Projects also employs KCAD alumni Aaron Sullivan (’04, BFA Graphic Design) and Brian Borque (’12, BFA Graphic Design), who both worked on the WRMPA campaign, as well as newcomer Eric Lowe (’15, BFA Graphic Design), who joined the agency in 2016.
