News Bites: MFA Alumnae Featured in Group Exhibition at Art Basel Miami

Posted January 3, 2017 in AlumniNews BitesMaster of Fine Arts

A high-profile group exhibition presented by Sirona Fine Art for the recent Art Basel Week in Miami Beach featured Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University (KCAD) alumnae Miranda Graham (’13, MFA) and Aneka Ingold (’14, MFA).

The 40 artists included in Chévere were handpicked from around the world by co-curators Didi Menendez, creator of PoetsArtists magazine, and Sergio Gomez, a Chicago-based visual artist who also directs both 33 Contemporary Gallery and the Zhou B. Art Center among a number of other curatorial pursuits.

Graham, who works primarily in oil paint and photography, showed her oil painting “St. Julia and the Bull.”

Characterized by vibrant colors, interplay of light and shadow, and a simultaneous revealing and concealing of form, her work grapples with formalized assumptions of beauty. In addition to her fine art practice, Graham is currently working as an adjunct instructor at KCAD and Grand Valley State University.

Ingold, who won the Grand Prize in the Vying 2015 competition during last year’s Art Basel Week in Miami, showed her portrait of Frida Khalo aptly titled “The Heart of Frida.”

Her paintings typically incorporate flat color patterns and imagined landscapes populated by figures, both human and animal, and inanimate objects to form layered visual narratives. In addition to her creative practice, Ingold is currently an adjunct instructor at the University of Tampa.

Both Graham and Ingold were featured in an issue of PoetsArtists dedicated to profiling the artists included in Chévere. Graham also participated alongside other artists featured in the exhibition on a discussion panel exploring the exhibition’s intent and scope of work.

While Art Basel Week may have wrapped up, Chévere remains on display at Sirona Fine Art through February 3, 2017. Click here for more information.
