News Bites: MFA Painting Student Curates Powerful Exhibition on Otherness

The EXPO Collective, a Chicago-based arts collective that includes KCAD MFA Painting student Ricardo Gonzalez, recently celebrated the opening of an exhibition inspired by another form of artistic expression: spoken word poetry.

Curated by Gonzalez and housed in Chicago’s Beverly Arts Center, “For the Brown Kids” was christened after a poem of the same name, written by spoken word artist Rodrigo Sanchez-Chavarria, that dives deep into what it’s like to be a young Latino growing up in America.

To create the exhibition, 19 artists from the Chicago community rendered artistic interpretations of Sanchez-Chavarria’s poem, drawing on their own talents and experiences to give visual life to the words.

“For the Brown Kids” will be on display through November. See below for more photos from the opening reception:
