MFA Photography student Amanda Carmer was recently awarded a $1,500 grant from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs (MCACA) through its New Leaders Arts Council of Michigan Retention and Engagement Program. The program is dedicated to promoting arts and culture statewide by nurturing young creative leaders.

Carmer intends to use the money to help with marketing, promotional, and administrative costs at Craft House, a local gallery and cooperative workspace that she and KCAD alum Hunter Bridwell (’10, Photography) founded in the fall of 2012. Recently, Craft House launched The CO-OP Project, an initiative that will bring local creative professionals together this summer for a three-month collaborative art project.

MACAC Executive Director John Bracey praised the comprehensiveness of Carmer’s grant application, citing Craft House’s educational value as a majoring determining factor in awarding her the grant.

Of the 32 separate grants awarded, Carmer’s was the only one given to an individual. The rest were given to area organizations.
